We explore those features in-depth here. Find a dealer near you to check out the Ford Explorer in-person!

Ford Explorer: Engine Specs

As you'd expect from a Ford SUV, the Ford Explorer offers three powerful engines. The standard engine is a 3.5L V6 that generates 290 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque.

If you want the benefit of even more power and improved fuel efficiency, opt for the 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 engine that delivers 280 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. With this engine, you can reach your maximum EPA-estimated fuel economy of 18-19 MPG city and 25-27 MPG highway, making this a good choice for your next long-distance road trip.

To maximize your towing capabilities, however, upgrade to the 3.5L EcoBoost® V6. With this engine under the hood, you'll get an output of 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, and the ability to tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Ford Explorer Handling Capabilities

To add to this SUV's hefty powertrain, an Intelligent 4-Wheel Drive (4WD) system is available, which includes the Terrain Management System™.

The Intelligent 4WD system actively monitors your road conditions and automatically redistributes torque to improve your grip on wet or snowy roadways. The Terrain Management System™ helps improve your traction even more.

It works by giving you selectable modes that customize your performance to suit your conditions. Drive modes are:

  • Normal
  • Mud/Ruts
  • Sand
  • Grass/Gravel/Snow

Normal mode is ideal for everyday driving, while Mud/Rut mode can help you be more aggressive on muddy backroads. Meanwhile, if you're taking a boat to the lake up north, the Sand setting adjusts your throttle progression and gear shifts to optimize torque transfer to the wheels.

When it snows or when you head off the beaten path, Grass/Gravel/Snow mode will help limit wheel slip and improve traction by delivering earlier upshifts.

Adventure-Ready Features

The Ford Explorer offers several other features that help make this SUV a great companion for any adventure. For example, it includes a 110V AC power outlet that can accommodate a household-style plug. This is ideal for plugging in a laptop, cooler, or any other appliance you need to power up.

The Explorer seats six or seven comfortably, while still providing 21 cubic feet of cargo space for all your gear. If the rear seat is empty, utilize all 43.9 cubic feet of space by pressing a button to easily store the PowerFold® third-row seat into the cargo floor and create a flat load space.

If you need even more room, fold down the second row to access all 81.7 cubic feet of cargo space. This area is easily accessible with the hands-free foot-activated liftgate that opens with a kicking motion under the rear bumper. This means you can load up your car without having to put down what you're holding to open the liftgate.
